Meetup Orders Open + we made a decision together + co-op conversations with Alice

It's been a big month...

COOKS CO~OP

Harvest’s from Ange’s garden for the Co-op

HELLO! MEMBERS AND YET-TO-BES…

Storms, candour, workshops… it’s been a big month and we’re feeling the energy grow… and waaaaannnneee. We’re ready for a holiday, are you?

We passed a bit of a threshold this month by finally introducing consent decision making to our wider membership. It’s a foundational piece for the kind of co-operative we’re hoping to grow. How’d it’d go? Read on!

The Report

HOW’S THE CO-OP DOING?

Here’s a report out on some Co-op facts. This report’s coverage will morph depending on what’s on top for us. Interested in knowing something in particular? Post suggestions in our Systems Slack Channel.

MEMBERSHIP GROWTH

We’ve increased from 13 member households in March, to 32 member households in November. That’s up 2 households from last month. We have 22 Working Members & 10 General Members.

CORE TEAM REIMBURSEMENT

The core team accumulatively did many hours. Last month they took the same amount of credit split as the previous month ($600 to Ange, $600 to Billy, plus 0% at the til for Ange, Billy & Olga).

WORKING MEMBER CONTRIBUTIONS

Our Co-op relies both on our Core Team and Working Members’ contributions. It’s clear that some Working Member Households are putting in well more than 3 hours a month. Without these extra hours, we wouldn’t run so smoothly. We definitely don’t take this for granted, in fact, we want to encourage it. How?

We (Billy & Ange) want to build a proposal on how to value members’ contributions as they become more extensive, and if you’re interested in weighing in, we’d love that. We hope to bring this to consent, once we’ve gathered enough advice to flesh it out. Keep your eyes peeled for this in the new Proposal Channel coming to Slack very soon.

INTERESTED IN JOINING OUR CO-OP?

We’re pausing accepting any new trial members until January. We need to water our seedlings to make sure they’re thriving before planting any new members. Apologies that we didn’t manage the ‘mid Meetup Newsletter’ we had hoped to create for our not-yet-members. We’ll see you in January, hopefully with a burst of new year energy!

Co-op News…

WE HAD A WORKSHOP

Challenges

More challenges

A couple months ago I put a call out for anyone interested in learning how to make decisions by 'consent'. To be honest, I got, like, one response. I'm going to assume (for now) that this reflects on the fullness of our lives because… who doesn't care about decision making?!

Well as things would have it, Billy and I dropped ourselves right in the poo and catalysed the decision making journey for us. We developed and 'proposed' a big-ish change to how Meetups work, via Slack. Although we gained some feedback on the proposal, it was not enough, but we took the approval we had and implemented the changes. A chaotic Meetup ensued for some, including Billy & I. Although most people appreciated the general system’s change, there was also frustration with the stress it caused. Too much, too fast, and not enough co-design.

So, we used the poo to do what it does best - fertilise - a workshop. Nine of us met up last Saturday afternoon.

I can't take you through all the ins and outs, but after three hours, we gained consent to proceed with a direction proposed by Naomi. Then, a group of us worked across the week, fleshing this out into something we could implement. You can see it here, and tell us what you think! We'd love that. There will be other chances to shape and improve our efforts going forward - because that's what decisions through consent are all about - experimenting, providing feedback, and improving.

Finally, in case you need some convincing to come to our next workshop - a few words from the proposal holder:

I found the workshop a great chance to connect with our members. I enjoyed learning the foundations of consent-based decision making and getting a chance to share ideas and opportunities for the co-op. Ange made a really safe space for us to try out our new decision-making skills on a few proposals and then work together to shape up a model for the next meet-up. Also great cookies and snacks!

And now some words from another awesome member

Alice and her conversations initiative

It’s been two months since the launch of our Co-op Conversations and I’ve had a great time getting to know the things that drive your food choices and shopping habits.

This initiative is here to listen more closely to you, our members, and to our producers. Our goals are simple:

Alice with one of her other work hats on

  • Understand what drives your shopping decisions and how we can better support your weekly food choices

  • Capture likes, dislikes, and stories from our members to help us grow in the right direction

  • Share the stories of our members and producers so we can all feel more connected to the food we eat

What have I heard over the past two months?

What drives you to be in our Co-op:

#1 Community

#2 Local Produce

#3 Reduced Packaging.

Products you love: all things Pasta'bah, the farro pizza bases, kombucha, goats gouda, Herbies, raw cheeses and Vivani Chocolates

Products you don’t love: the pet mince (too fatty), the goats brie (too goaty!) and the organic mango slices (slightly under ripe)

What drives your shopping decisions?

You also told us how helpful it is that the Co-op offers a streamlined place to source great quality products from, which you trust. And finally, I’ve had some great conversation around how we are all balancing our food choices. It’s been interesting to hear how everyone is working to balance what they buy against their personal values and everyday considerations such as price and accessibility. I’m keen to dive into this more in the coming months.

Call Out for 1-1 chats!!!

I would love to speak to any members one to one, and understand more about what brought you into the Co-op and how you find your experience being part of our community. If you would like to spare an hour over drinks and snacks please get in touch via our Slack channel #co-op-conversations.

The List

WHAT’S NOT SO NEW IN THE LIST + PRESENT SHOPPING!!

While retail shops are filling to the brim with Christmas goodies, we’re really trying very hard to say there’s nothing new in the list. We’re hoping to use these couple of months to sell through some laggards on our shelves, so we start the year with less stock on hand.

Lucky for us, some of our laggards are very present-friendly! Think piccalilli, raspberry jam, divine chocolate bars and smoked shoyu for your Secret Santas this month. Your Co-op will thank you.

We have like a gazillion (978) products on the list so let’s call that a wrap for the year.

[Postscript: and then we did add some more dried and frozen fruit options… Oh, and half a cow coming early December. Oh, and fresh sprouts. Oh, and a whole lamb coming later this week. BUT. THAT. IS. IT. PEOPLE.]

ENOUGH FROM US, TIME TO SHOP

Hope to see you Saturday 15th November at our consent-improved-Meetup

Members: please tell us if you can’t make it

Non-members: we would still love to know if you’re interested in joining in 2026. Reply to this email and we’ll prioritise you for a trial in January.

xx your Co-op crew.
